Pomeron flux renormalization in soft and hard diffraction
نویسنده
چکیده
While the main features of elastic, diffractive and total cross sections are described well by Regge theory, the measured rise of the proton-(anti)proton single diffraction dissociation cross section with energy is considerably smaller than the theoretical prediction based on factorization and a constant triplepomeron coupling. The observed energy dependence is obtained by renormalizing the pomeron flux “carried” by a nucleon to unity. Double diffraction and double pomeron exchange cross sections are reevaluated and compared to data, and a new interpretation of hard diffraction results emerges in which the hard pomeron obeys the momentum sum rule.

Pomeron Flux Renormalization: A scaling Law in Diffraction
The pomeron flux renormalization hypothesis is reviewed and presented as a scaling law in diffraction. Predictions for soft and hard diffraction based on pomeron flux scaling are compared with experimental results. STANDARD POMERON FLUX The cross section for hadron dissociation on protons, hp → Xp, at large xF ≡ p‖/2 √ s, where p‖ is the z(beam)-component of the (leading) proton in the final st...

One of the more interesting developments from recent collider experiments is the finding that hadronic total cross sections as well as elastic cross sections can be described by the exchange of a “soft Pomeron” pole in the near-forward limit. The most important consequence of Pomeron being a pole is the factorization property. However, due to Pomeron intercept being greater than 1, the extrapol...
متن کاملFactorization and Scaling in Hadronic Diffraction
In standard Regge theory, the contribution of the tripe-pomeron amplitude to the t = 0 differential cross section for single diffraction dissociation has the form dσ/dMdt|t=0 ∼ (s/s0)IP (0)−1]/(M2)αIP (0), where αIP (t) is the pomeron trajectory. For αIP (0) > 1, this form, which is based on factorization, does not scale with energy. From an analysis of pp and p̄p data from fixed target to colli...
متن کاملDiffraction at Hera and Implications for Tevatron and Lhc
We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC. One of the most important experimental results from the DESY ep coll...
متن کاملSoft Remnant Interactions and Rapidity Gaps
Soft colour exchange models give a unified description of both diffractive and non-diffractive events, such that ep and p¯ p collider data with and without rapidity gaps are well reproduced. We show that these models also describe the new Teva-tron data on diffraction based on observed leading antiprotons, which provide new information on how to treat the beam particle remnant in the Monte Carl...
